The Beach of the Dead

The beach of the dead is one of the beaches that you must visit at least once in your life, because believe us when we tell you that it is one of the most beautiful beaches in Spain. We know that this last sentence is something very common, but it is true that this beach enchants all its visitors.

It is a beach with fine sand, made up of very fine pebbles, especially on the seashore, which makes it very easy to peel the sand off your body when drying off.

Where is the beach of the dead?

The beach of the dead is located in the famous Cabo de Gata, in Almeria. This immense beach, almost 1 kilometre long, is located between the towns of Agua Amarga and Carboneras, two of the towns that make up the Cabo de Gata.

We must bear in mind that the beach of the dead is located at the foot of a cliff, which is why access to the final area must be done on foot. However, you can go to this beach in Almeria by car and then walk down to the beach. That is why it is recommended to go with booties or sports shoes, in order to go with maximum safety.

There are currently three routes to the beach:

  • The first, 700 metres long and somewhat steep, starts from the Tourist Information Point.
  • The second, much shorter but steeper route starts from the car park itself.
  • The third, much more accessible than the other two, thanks to a recently built stone staircase, starts from the Playa de los Muertos viewpoint.

Access by sea

Due to the fame acquired by this beach and the great affluence it has, the new coastal regulation does not allow companies to make any kind of disembarkation at the beach of the dead. For this reason, access to the beach by sea is currently not permitted.

In the summer season there is a paying car park available (approximately €5 per day). Once the car is parked, access to the beach is not easy, and it is not advisable for children, the elderly or those with mobility problems.

Beach of the Dead

Why is this corner of Almería called Playa de los Muertos (Beach of the Dead)?

The name of this beach comes from the fact that in the past, due to its geographical location, its swell and the meeting of various sea currents, it was a place where the corpses of shipwrecked sailors were washed up. This is a story traditionally known by the people of Almeria, although we must bear in mind that nowadays this beach enjoys maximum security and does not flaunt its name.

Characteristics of Los Muertos beach

The water of this beach is quite crystal clear, which allows for fun days of snorkelling. In addition, we must take into account that this beach of Cabo de Gata has the characteristic that the shore hides a huge slope, so we recommend that children are accompanied.

However, although in good weather conditions the swell is moderate, on days with strong easterly winds bathing becomes dangerous.

Best time of year to visit the beach of the dead

Being one of the most famous beaches in Almeria, it is true that in the months of July and August is when it receives the greatest influx of bathers. It is a fairly large beach, so it is difficult to find saturation quotas, however, in order to enjoy this beach with more peace and quiet, we recommend that you visit the beach of the dead in the months of June and September. (if you want to take a dip and enjoy the crystal clear waters).

If you are more inclined to enjoy the coves in winter, with absolute peace and quiet and solitude, visiting this beach in Cabo de Gata in the months of March, April or May will not leave you indifferent.

Nudism on the beach of the dead

During the 80s, 90s and even the early 2000s, Los Muertos beach was one of the nudist beaches par excellence in Almeria. However, this beach became famous for its crystal clear waters and its natural enclave and today, we can say that the vast majority of visitors do not practice nudism.

For this reason, if you are looking for a nudist beach in AlmeríaAt present, the beach of the dead is not the best place.
