Pope Cove in Jávea

Jávea's Cala Pope is a small old cove located below the cliffs of the Cabo de San Antonio area. You may have heard of the Cala del Pope and surely good things, and this is normal because for a long time, even for generations, this cove was quite an emblematic place for the inhabitants of Jávea. Here you could enjoy crystal clear and calm waters and in fact it was one of the most charming places in the whole Valencian Community.

And if you wonder why we are talking in the past tense, it is because unfortunately the Cala del Pope has already disappeared due to the force of nature, which has made it disappear. If you try to visit it you will no longer find a place for bathing, but only the rocky part and a significant danger of landslides.

At the moment there is only a lookout point with ropes at the foot of the Tangó Restaurant, from which you can enjoy beautiful views, but the lookout point itself is neglected. But there is a nice and fun way to get to the Cala del Pope without the danger of falling. Here we tell you the trick...

Is Cala del Pope also known as Cala Tangó?

Some people think that Cala del Pope and Cala Tangó are the same, in fact you will find a lot of content about Cala del Pope or Cala Tangó, but they are really two different coves that are very close to each other. Cala Tangó is another small cove that is hidden behind the "Punta or Morro de la Creveta". In the past this cove had a shipwreck rescue shelter which had a metal walkway protruding from the rocky point. This point was shaped like the "tangón" of some boats, so the cove below was called Tangó.

And as we promised, the best way to get to both Pope's cove and Tangó cove is via one of the many Kayak excursions in JáveaHere you will find exactly the kayak excursion to Tangó cove in Jávea

Do you want to know what activities you can do in this area?

To get to the Cala del Pope, you can do so via the stairs at the Tangó Restaurant, which have direct access to the beach (what is left of it). The restaurant itself claims that the stairs are private and should not be used, but as mentioned above, with the danger of landslides that the cove suffers from, it is not very convenient to visit it.

As you approach the Cala del Pope cove in Jávea you will see signs warning that it is forbidden to go there due to the danger of landslides.

You can also go to the cove if you do it through the viewpoint that we have mentioned that is located below the restaurant itself, because although it is neglected, it was enabled in 2014 to reach the cove in a safer way and without having to go through the inside of the restaurant. But as we have said, the safest and really most fun and advisable way is with a good kayak excursion.
